I am a Teach For India fellow in my second year of fellowship at SGV School, Kadugodi; teaching 35 under-privileged kids from a low income community.
I strongly believe (and I have seen it work) that sports helps in building a good and strong human being. Hence, I always encourage my kids to play sports and through that find and work on their strengths and areas of improvements.
Being from humble backgrounds my kids were not exposed to much of outdoor sports until last year: when they started to learn to play football! I believe, just like education every child has a right to play.
Why am I doing this campaign?
Last year I enrolled 20 kids from my classroom for the Just For Kicks (JFK) programme and it did wonders for them. Not only did they learn how to play football; the game instilled some values like sportsmanship, team-spirit, desire to learn and focus, sense of responsibility, and fairness in them.
This year, again, I have the chance to enroll them for the JFK programme and continue the awesome experience for my kids that they had last year.
Why do I need the money?
To enroll 2 teams from my classroom (one girls' and one boys' team). Also I'll have to arrange for first aid kit, transportation during the tournament and for any kind of emergencies.
How can you help in some other way?
It'll be really great if you can help me raise the funds, but if you are not able to do so you can always come to my school and help the kids learn football. You can volunteer to help out the coach during training sessions.
You can just come on weekends to our school with your friends and play football with the kids. Last year some really nice people came to our school and played football and spent some time with the kids. The kids really enjoyed it and they learnt a lot as well.
You can also come to the tournament (whenever it happens) and encourage the kids.
