It seemed like just another day for our loving family. Until dozens of panicked neighbors came knocking on our door, sharing what they had just heard about via WhatsApp- that our son was in a horrible accident.
It was the fear that all parents have- that no parents should ever have to live through.
Our healthy 26-year son, our beloved Umraz, had a motorcycle accident that gave him a head injury and put him into a coma. His helmet just wasn’t strong enough to withstand the impact.
That was Thursday, April 5, 2018. We haven’t left his hospital bed since.
Umraz was a vibrant young man
For the first two weeks, our family huddled by his bedside looking for some sign of cognitive life. He finally opened his eyes and was able to signal to us with his hands.
While this progress gave us relief and hope, it simultaneously gave the Columbia Asia Hospital in Mysore the opportunity to take him out of ICU and threaten to send him home.
We approached our bank and got the maximum loan we could qualify for- 5 lakh rupees. That covered the first two weeks in ICU.
Now the hospital informed us that they will discharge him while in a coma if we can't afford to pay 2 lakhs every week.
Umraz was building his life
If Umraz gets forcibly discharged, his chance of getting an infection at home is high. And, he is less likely to get a proper psychological and physiological recovery.
Even if we did in-home care, the estimated cost is 25 lakhs for the first year alone due to the need for nurses (day & night), physiotherapists, medications, one-time supplies, and regular doctor consultations.
How you can help
We ask of you to immediately help us so that we can keep Umraz with the best medical care during this critical period.
Your support and contribution can give our son the medical care he needs to regain his independence and live his life with dignity.
