    Babies of Kavya

    from Bangalore, Karnataka

Every morning, Kavya is at the hospital by 9 am. She spends the rest of the day by her twin babies’ side, carrying them for exactly 30 minutes each. Before leaving, she touches their foreheads, saying goodbye and takes a photo of them on her phone to send it to her husband, Rajaneesh, who is miles away from Bengaluru. He can see his babies only on Sunday’s because he needs to work really hard to pay for their bills. It’s been nearly 60 days since their twins were born, only 666 and 760 grams each, barely the size of Kavya’s arm. And these 60 days have felt like a lifetime for these parents whose only wish is to take their babies back home healthy. However, their fight isn’t over yet.

Rajaneesh reunited with his wife and babies

A painful beginning

Until the morning of 23rd November 2018, Kavya felt good. The soreness and morning sickness aside, her pregnancy was smooth sailing.

Even the morning of the delivery, I didn’t realise that something was wrong. It was only my 7th month of pregnancy. My due date was in March and I thought I had nothing to worry about. I felt a little pain in my stomach and thought it was normal, but my doctor wasn’t convinced. Since there were no facilities in our hometown, we immediately took an ambulance to Bengaluru.” – Kavya

In Bengaluru, Kavya gave birth to twin girls, both born extremely premature and underweight. As a result, they suffered respiratory distress and were immediately placed on ventilator support.

Kavya and Rajaneesh in happier times

They can't give up now after 6 years of waiting

Kavya and Rajaneesh thought that they could take their babies home in a couple of days. After 6 years of a blissful married life, this is all they waited for. But days turned to weeks and weeks into months, and hospital expenses are piling. They cannot imagine taking their babies off the ventilator support as the doctors strongly suggest it could be highly risky at this stage.
"Only because we were not fortunate enough to have enough money we will have to risk our babies losing their lives after so many years of waiting" - Kavya
Rajaneesh, is in their hometown, 100kms from Bengaluru where he is struggling to save every rupee, while Kavya stays at a distant relatives place in the city because she wants to be at the hospital every single morning at 9 AM. Kavya video calls him on Whatsapp to show him their babies. Rajaneesh can't help but tear up.

They know they can take their babies home alive if they get NICU care for a few more days

Their babies are just about 1kg each now and can only go home when they’re 1.5 kgs and stronger. The only way for them to recover is to stay in the NICU for at least 6 more weeks, but Rajaneesh, a small stationary shop owner, can’t afford it without your help. The twin girls turn 2-months-old in a few days, and all they’ve ever known is pain. They’ve never fallen asleep in their mother’s arms, haven’t woken up to their doting grandparents surrounding them and haven’t known a life beyond the beeping machines in the NICU – your help can give them a new life.
Your support will save Kavya and Rajaneesh's baby girls.
