SAVE OUR SOLES is a project aimed at improving and bettering the plight of porters who earn minimum wages in carrying heavy loads of 30 to 40 kgs of equipment and supplies, in remote mountain terrains, in order to support their families. Across the world, even on the highest & most popular rated treks, the plight of porters, are harsh realities often overlooked. With a basket ('doko') supported solely by a head-strap ('naamlo') porters have to walk for hours often stopping to catch their breath, as they ascend up the trail. Carrying this heavy load can be potentially dangerous at high altitudes (above 10,000ft) where the oxygen level is lower than in their normal work environment. A weight of 30-40kgs, though rare, is not unheard of. We at Adventure-Pulse have over the last 4 years of operation, endeavored to make a small difference, especially in the lives of the young men who have worked with us, ensuring their safety and comfort. Appreciating the fact that no trek or climbing expedition would be complete without the strength and endurance of these boys, we have encouraged our clients to treat them as part of the team, but more importantly, provided fair wages and health insurance. As part of this endeavor, we have established a social initiative referred to as SAVE OUR SOLES (SOS), where a tangible difference can be made in their lives. Often having to trek in substandard footwear, ranging from canvas shoes, and torn sneakers to rubber slippers, in subzero temperatures, skin damage, injury and frost bite are common ailments. As a part of our Mount Everest climb next year SAVE OUR SOLES is a quantifiable project, where we will provide 100 porters with high ankle, insulated trekking shoes which will ensure safety and protect their means of livelihood and in the process, increase there life span.
