The biggest question that comes into the picture in the 21st century is if we are still seeing sex as just a source to reproduce biological kinds. Sex is one of the basic human needs and a very natural instinct. But as we are living in a civilized world, we can’t let our instinct overwhelm us. Youth need to be taught about safe sex and its other essentials. With proper sex education, we can see a significant drop in porn addiction, rape cases, the flesh trade, and many other such evils in society. As technology is developing at a rapid speed, naïve teenagers have access to all kinds of things, they may be good or bad. As teenage is like clay that can be molded in any shape one wants, it is necessary that steps should be taken to make them aware of sex education, so that they could be saved from going on the wrong track. With proper guidance and knowledge, they could be saved from being a victim of prevailing myths, manipulations, and heresies. With the help of sex education, youth can make informed choices and be motivated to make healthy decisions about their sexuality and sexual desires.
“A study on child abuse in India, conducted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, stated that 53% of boys and 47% of girls surveyed faced some form of sexual abuse. Therefore, FLE might help the vulnerable young generation to be aware of their sexual rights and empower them to protect themselves from any, sexual abuse, the undesired act of violence, and molestation.” In India, we still feel awkward talking about safe sex, safe choices regarding sexual intercourse, etc. we still look at pre-marital sex as a taboo. Even though India has been witnessing a shift of opinion among the younger generation, the existing generation still looks at sex as a taboo and does not wish to discuss it.
If sex education among youth and adults is neglected it could be disastrous for society and wreak havoc. There would be a significant increase in rape, molestation, and harassment cases; a rise in anxiety and stress among youth; significant exposure to porn and adult content; an increased urge towards narcotic substances; and also maybe a lack of confidence among youth.
Sex education should be mandatorily included in school and college curricula to make sure that at least youth are being garnered with basic knowledge about it. Parents and mentors should be more open and frank with the youth, in order to sustain a healthy conversation regarding sex education. Not just in India but all over the world, all kinds of gender should be respected and sex education should not limit itself to just males and females. However maybe the conditions but with constant efforts and growth, everything in achievable.
