During the Chennai of flood,it was a common sight that sanitary pads were floating everywhere on streets, platform, sea shore and for that matter washed into our houses along with the flood water.Sanitary pads were also one of the major cause for the water to not drain easily as it clogged the drainage system. So we at project Red Earth decided to dispose the used sanitary pads without burning by segregating the pads and use alternative ideas to dispose it.We dispose 300 to 350 pads collected from a girls school on a daily basis. The principal says that the labor never changed after our collections of pads from school. The cleaner who cleaned the toilets had to dispose these pads, which is now taken over by us.We have been reaching out to schools and helping them to dispose their waste in a more effective manner.
Having successfully creating a solution without polluting the environment. No burning or incinerating but creating new sources which can be used as fertilizer. We have also provided for the caretaker/cleaner at the girls school.
The objective of the campaign is to raise the money for buying land, which will help us to recycle used female hygiene products in 4 panchayats and increase our reach to 10 schools and to give employment for 20 members.
I was able to successfully do it without creating any pollution. No burning and using it has a fertilizer.
