While the urban world is looking up at eco-habitats in our villages, the fresh produce that comes from there, the simplicity of life and the intimacy our villages share with nature, can you imagine what's on the minds of most children living in our villages? They still have a beautiful dream. Their dreams ought to be protected, nurtured and supported. Their families look up to education as the only bridge that could take them forward. Their schools are a means to taking them to a future of their dreams.
One such humble school, which is nurturing 278 such dreams is PSM middle school in a village called Kulasekarapattinam an ancient port of historic significance in South Tamilnadu which is more than 100 years old. This school, started by my ancestor Thiru.P.Senthil Arumugam, run by my family has been providing free education to all children most of whom hail from downtrodden fishermen families. The school has so far been run successfully by the grace of Almighty. An inquisitive student Bhuvaneshwari has been awarded the Young scientist award by the Minister for higher education for a state level competition and an award for the best school in Tuticorin district has been awarded to the Principal of the school. Though the aspirations of the children studying in this school are fresh, the buildings have become dilapidated owing to age. Renovating the existing building is estimated to cost around 2500000 and we are working towards it.
Speaking of what drives us in this initiative is the realization, that it takes a burning fire to light a new lamp or to start a new school like PSM. Though such an initiative is far-fetched for most of us, we can at least do our bit to protect the flame of an existing lamp and maintain its glow.
