Palliative Care Training For General Practitioners Across India

Among its many challenges, India, the second most populated country in the world is severely deficient in Palliative care services.4% of its population ie 41,066,824 are above the age of 65 , one million cases of cancer are diagnosed every year and with all this we have not yet mentioned about the non malignant conditions.

Only 16 out of 28 states and 7 union territories have any palliative care services at all( less than 45%).There are only few hundred doctors trained in providing Palliative care services.

Through this project I am proposing to travel to 12 states in India where the tribal population is dense and palliative care is close to nil and train the local general practitioners in basics of Palliative care through a training programme in the same. This will increase the work force of the hosting group so that they will be able to start a centre or take up mobile/Home care services on their own.

I did a study called "what constitutes a Good Death according to the terminally ill people in a hospice in Telangana" This brought out interesting insights and when presented at the IAPCON Coimbatore Conference, suggestion was made to carry it out pan India. This will also be another work undertaken during these 12 months.

The centres chosen are;

1.Manipur- Regional Institute of Medical sciences, Palliative care department.

2.Meghalaya- North Eastern Indira Gandhi Institution of Health and Medical sciences- Caters to kuki tribes.

3. Tripura- Regional Cancer centre- Only one in state, caters to chakma tribes

4.HImachal Pradesh- Tashi Delek hospital, caters to the refugee population of Tibet.

5.Koshish Hospice- Jharkhand, caters to the tribal population, only hospice in state.

6. Punjab- Pahal Jalandar - low distribution of pain relieving oral morphine due to prevalence of substance abuse with other drugs and misconceptions.

7.Uttarakhand- Gangaprem Hospice- established center, can be utilized to train doctors from other states too.

8.J and K- Hakim Sanaullah Cancer centre.Only one in the state.

9.Lakshwadeep- Lakshwadeep Institute of Medical sciences, only one in the UT.

10.Goa- shanti Avedana hospice.Only one in the UT

11.Kerala- Trivandrum Institute Of medical sciences- Where Dr Rajagopal Sir chairs the institution.

12. Tamil Nadu- RMD group of institutions- caters to doctors in rural Tamil Nadu as well.

This is a self funded project and taking up this project will also mean one year of no salary.

Food, accommodation, travel, stipend and training material for the General practitioners for every month is estimated as follows,
Housing- 10,000 INR
In state travel- 10,000 INR
Food- 5,000 INR
Study material for the GPs- 5,000INR
