It is to be noted that, before getting into the details of the entire project, we want to clarify that this is a pilot project and the objective is to form a replicable module of intervention in the education domain during natural calamities
Project Areas: Dhemaji, Majuli and Morigaon
Project Cost: Rs. 12.00Lacs
Problem Statement
Floods in Assam are an annual feature, often spread out over two to three phases affecting more than 2.0million people every time. Vast swathes of land in Brahmaputra valley and Barak Valley are submerged in the floods each year.
The state suffers huge losses every year due to a virtual halt on all economic activities in the affected parts for the duration of the floods. Although, improvements in the capacity of the have made rescue and relief operations more efficient and swifter than ever before, still the rebuilding efforts take up valuable state resources.
Education, especially of school going kids takes a beating with schools being converted to relief shelters housing entire villages sometimes. With schools remaining closed for the duration, the teaching process is hampered. This problem is especially acute for students in classes 10th and 12th. With board exams a couple of months away and the pressure to succeed, the disruption in studies severely affect their mental well-being also.
To reduce the disruption in studies and to help students to focus on their education with the right frame of mind, The Utkarsh Foundation and WE Foundation India propose the following interventions. In the initial phase the initiative will focus on Morigaon district in Assam.
Utkarsh Foundation
The Utkarsh Foundation (development society) is a non-government organisation registered under the Society Registration Act, 1860. The objective behind its formation is to work for the betterment of the educational ecosystem of the state and contribute towards skilling of our youths for creating sustainable livelihood opportunities in the state.
The organisation has already been running coaching initiatives in various interior places of Assam along with free classes for kids from marginalised households. Moreover, they have also been working in developing innovative activity based learning techniques for promoting quality science education in the state.

WE Foundation India
WE Foundation India is a part of a dream that was vision in 2012. It took shape in 2017 as a Charitable Trust dedicated for Wildlife and Nature Conservation. It has been registered at Sr. Sub-Registrar, Kamrup (M), Assam, India. WE Foundation India is an effort to foster Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources by bridging the gap between Nature and Human, which is of utmost necessity to gift a better world to our future generations. The motto of the organisation is to strengthen the capacity by establishing a network of individuals and organisations with the same thoughts to fulfil the Mission and Vision of Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
Project Area
Rather than focussing in a marks oriented evaluation system, the entire project will work for overall mental conditioning of the students.
Target Group
The project will work with a total of 100 numbers of children during the flood period, 40 each from Dhemaji and Morigaon and 20 from Majuli.
The selection of these students will be done purely on the basis of their financial capabilities as well as their merit. Local authorities will help us in this process. 100 most underprivileged students from the mentioned project area will be the part of this process.
Salient Features of this project
The entire project will focus on both normal academic curriculum as well as few other essential attributes.
Specially designed course module
The modules will focus primarily on Science and Mathematics and English Grammar. Students from Assam studying in vernacular medium often struggle in these three subjects. We as a team will prepare a module which will focus particularly on concepts which students find hard to understand. Vedic mathematics will also be an integral part of this module so that there is upgradation in problem solving skills of students.
Classes on Digital Literacy
The world today runs on digital platforms. The whole country is shifting its focus into digitalization along with the rest of the world. Thus, it is extremely important to be aware of what’s happening around and also understand its basics. Thus, it is being planned that digital literacy classes will be run during this period and also certificates will be provided to the students from recognised institutes on successfully completing the course.
Personality development sessions will be conducted by professionals to prepare the students for bigger challenges in life.
Environmental Awareness Program
Flood is a natural calamity which happens each and every year in our project areas. Thus, it is important for the young generation to understand it deeply so that they can come up with innovative ideas in order to deal with it. The project will have sessions talking extensively about these issues with the students. Experts from Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) as well as other renowned personalities working in such fields will take part as mentors in this program.
Interactive sessions with Counsellors
Objective of conducting these sessions is to help students deal with the stress of disasters and motivate them towards leading a healthy and responsible lifestyle. Certified Clinical Psychologists will be part of such sessions.
Health Camp
Often diseases spread very fast during floods. Thus, putting up a health camp can be very beneficial for the community. People in and around the affected area can come and be a part of this camp.
Awareness Campaigns
During this project period, an awareness campaign will be done which will discuss and aware people about various social issues. Leaflets and folders along with banners and posters will be made and will be distributed in and around project area.
Distribution of Education-Kit
This is one of the most attractive aspects of the program. An educational kit will be distributed amongst the students during this program. This kit will contain relevant equipments and one activity based learning unit. This learning unit basically includes equipments for performing various science experiments which are relevant and useful. Hands-on learning improves problem solving skills of students by teaching the art of visualisation.
Moreover, solar lights will be given so that even during days of power cuts, studies can continue relentlessly. T-shirts and school bags will be distributed amongst the students and these will carry the names of each and every donor who helped us in making this entire project successful.
Books on famous personalities, environment, science etc. will also be there in the kit.
Rain Protection Gear
The rain protection gear will include basic equipments such as raincoats, rain covers for books and umbrellas.
Expected Output
The implementation of such a project will help students cope-up with the loss of studies during floods and will also make them mentally fit through our personality development classes. We will ensure follow up of their development even after the end of the project duration and exams will be conducted time to time to judge their progress and preparation for the boards.
Expected Outcome
In the long run, we are confident that such a project will give students the confidence of succeeding in adverse conditions. Moreover, this project will be a good example for philanthropists or charitable organisations on where to put their money in. We firmly believe that education is the backbone of development and promoting it even under critical conditions will put forward the right messages and inspire everyone in every possible manner to work for it.
Break Up Budget
Thus, cost per student is Rs.12000.00 i.e. Rs.1000/month.
Thus, a small contribution of Rs.100/month from 10 people for a year can help us empower one student.
Project Areas: Dhemaji, Majuli and Morigaon
