One in four of us will face a mental health issue of some form in any given year. Risk is higher among the poor, homeless, the unemployed, people with low literacy, victims of violence, migrants and refugees, indigenous populations, children and adolescents, abused women and the neglected elderly. India has a treatment gap of almost 90% due to reasons of stigma, lack of infrastructure and human resources. Art forms such as dance, music and drama can work therapeutically with people experiencing physical, mental, emotional and social difficulties. Maya Tarana undertakes a para-skilling initiative with artists to support the comprehensive and integrative treatment of minor and severe mental health issues by strategically overcoming stigma. We are raising funds for research and experiments to understand chronic mental illness with schizophrenia patients in the Institute of Psychological Health, Mumbai through dance sessions based on Bharatanatyam. Quantitative and qualitative research on the bio-psycho-social impact of such intervention will be carried out from April to September. Further we plan to implement Maya Tarana sessions proactively with various communities such a families managing moderate and severe mental illness, children with special needs, SHGs, women in middle income housing societies with goal setting, session planning and monitoring and measurement of impact. A note from SHRUTI PARMAR, Founder: “Let us come together to understand Mental Health and recognise and share the benefits of our Art Forms to create better life experiences through a more creatively caring society!” For more details, join our group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/455875074538765/ or email us at mayatarana@gmail.com
