“My son, Krishan was always brave. He wanted to join the army and protect the country. But blood cancer and tuberculosis has shattered his dreams. Despite being extremely poor, we were ready to go to any extent to save him. But a few months back, he was diagnosed with clinical depression. Now, he keeps telling us, ‘Why are you wasting money for me. I will not make it anyway. It’s better that you let me die.’ Sometimes he becomes so restless and violent that he tries to go near the window of the hospital room and jump out. I don’t know what is scarier, cancer or the depression. I am scared that either of it can kill him if we fail to get him treated soon,” - Geeta, 17-year-old Krishan’s mother.

After suffering from chest pain for long, Krishan was diagnosed with tuberculosis

The last time that Krishan was enthusiastic about life was when he scored 86 per cent in his 10th standard exam despite suffering from terrible chest pain. His parents were so helpless that they couldn’t even celebrate their son’s success because he was already in the hospital. Every time he was taken to a doctor, they gave him medicines and said he would get better. It went on for a year until May 2018 when the chest pain became so severe that he could hardly breathe. He underwent several tests, and the doctors suspected that it was tuberculosis.

Krishan was also diagnosed with blood cancer within weeks

The doctors started treating him for tuberculosis. But when he got a recurring infection, doctors knew it was something severe. Weeks later, a few more tests confirmed that Krishan has acute myeloid leukaemia, a form of blood cancer which begins in the bone marrow and rapidly spreads in the blood and to other body parts. Krishan is being treated for his tuberculosis, but he needs a bone marrow transplant urgently to put an end to his sufferings. Over the months, his pain has increased so much that he has slipped into depression.

“After suffering for months, he has become so silent. My son always had a bright smile on his face that doesn’t exist anymore. He was so positive about life. We used to tell him that we might not be able to pay for his higher education. He used to tell us he would study hard, get a scholarship and achieve his dreams. We have always been so proud of him. But now seeing him lose faith in life makes us feel so helpless. We made sure that he got psychological help, but he doesn't seem to get any better.”

The family was surviving on their meager income, but it's not enough to save Krishan

Geeta stays at the hospital with Krishan while Ravinder stays in their hometown in Haryana. Ravinder harvests crops and rears poultry in his small plot of land, earning Rs 8000 to Rs 10,000 a month. Even with his meagre income, he made sure Krishan and his 19-year-old daughter, Preeti went to school. Both of the children were working very hard in order to secure a good job, so as to give their parents a better life. But now, the family is on the verge of losing Krishan and their income is no longer enough to save him.

“If we hadn’t got help from our relatives, we would never have been able to spend Rs 30 lakhs and would have lost himearlier. But now we have no way to arrange another Rs 35 lakhs to for his transplant. If we don’t get a transplant done as soon as possible, we will lose him.”
