Lakhnawi chikan is a renowned name the world over. However, its darkest facet includes the exploitation of women and young girls who are a part of this industry. Women mostly of the Muslim community agree to do this work for meager earnings just to ensure that the flame keeps burning inside their houses. A pay of Rs. 25-30 per kurta which sells for Rs. 300 minimum is the level of the disparity. The traditional skills have been passed from generations but today it fails to ensure a decent standard of living. Besides, health issues of weakening eyesight and spondylitis are common. I intend to improve the working conditions and the wages of these workers, which would also reduce the school drop out rates amongst young girls who work in this industry.
Bearing this idea for a social enterprise, I wish to be a part of Jagriti Yatra 2017. As part of the yatra fees I have to pay Rs. 40,000. I am pursuing an MA in Political Science from JNU, Delhi. Since my father is a retired employee of a government undertaking and I have already been a dependent on my parents since the past two years, I am unable to sponsor the Yatra on my own or ask my parents for the same. A small contribution from your side can help me be a part of Jagriti Yatra where I can learn how to build a social enterprise from scratch and bring a change in the lives of the women and girls of the chikan industry.
The Yatra would prove to be my first step in the domain of social entrepreneurship and through your support I would be able to pave a way to brighten the lives of many around.
