Help Wheelchair Basketball Players Reach the Championship Venue!

While the country is going gaga over the ICC World Cup, in one corner of an outdoor basketball ground, a mixed-gender team plays basketball from dawn to dusk every weekend, in a quest for their own championship!

Problem is, they don't know if they can get to the venue!
This is the Tamilnadu team, vying for the National Wheelchair Basketball Championship, to be held in Mohali from June 24-29. Problem is, they don't have the funds to get there.

As the world is going ahead with amazing new technologies, equipment, and support, this is an association that is languishing for funds.

Long story short, I’m trying to see if we can put a sum together to give them.
They need the following:
  1. Tickets to Mohali and back for 20 players (men, women, volunteers, and helpers): 3.1 lakhs
  2. Wheelchair transport: Rs. 1 lakh
  3. Track suits: 50,000

FAQ:
  • Why should we support this, when kids are struggling for basic education?
A: It’s an infinitely empowering experience, sports, and I can imagine how great it must be for these young men and women to win the nationals.

  • Who are these players?
A: They are players from all over the state. Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra are among the best in the country. While it used to be primarily a sport patronized by the Armed Forces, in Tamil Nadu, it is a bit different. There’s Prakash, who works with Intellect Design and commutes 75 kilometres every day to work (he’s getting his own ticket, in case you’re wondering); Keerthika, a player from Coimbatore who wants to do her MBA, and whose mother accompanies her every weekend to Chennai; and Malathi, my friend, who simply wants to get the team to Mohali in good shape.

  • Shouldn’t the government sponsor them? All of them in govt are corrupt.
A. They should, and they might be. We can try and make systemic changes, or just help. I’ve chosen the second path, and time is of the essence. Please do try the first path, if you have contacts, etc.

3. What if the money is not used properly?
A. Seriously, there is no money in the association! The rates given are at actuals, and CTS has been supporting the logistics, along with another NGO. Funds are what are needed and quite simply, just to get the players, their helpers, and their wheelchairs to Mohali and back.

4. Do we get tax exemption?
A. I’m afraid you don’t. It’s just a personal donation. That’s part of the reason they’re struggling to get funds from corporates also.

Thanks again folks, for making the dream of these basketballers come true!
The campaign will now be stopped.
While we resume helping the team become better, and look for more government support, we want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support.

Warm regards,
Meera

Hello hello!

The championship is underway! On Monday, the men's and women's teams played Meghalaya, and won! Looking forward to the rest of the matches...

You can view the matches live here: https://sport.video/wbfi

You can also see highlights of each match :)

Enjoy!

Also, we had a grand send -off for the players at the ground they practice in, on Sunday. Headway Foundation, one of the supporters of the association, brought people together to make it a great day to remember! Here are a few glimpses:

The campaign will soon close and once again, thank you for your support!

Things are going well!

Two of the players are travelling to Bangkok to pick up wheelchairs customized wheelchairs that will help them perform better! We are using these funds to block the tickets at the rate the agent promised.

We are confident we will reach the target.
