“A few months ago, we started helping a blind girl, Simu Das, who was thrown out of her house by her father. He left her as soon as he came to know that she had become blind. She also had a brother who had a vision impairment. Abandoned, they didn't have anything to eat for days. I knew that I had to do something for her and we took her in. Today, that same girl has made India proud through the women’s blind cricket team. She recently even won a match against Australia.” - Ram Kumar, Founder, Battle for Blindness Foundation.
Simu Das's success on the cricket field is a source of immense pride for the Battle for Blindness Foundation started by Ram Kumar. Simu's achievements were recognized not only on the field but also by the Assam Government. The Axom Divyanga Ratna Award she received recently is a testament to her outstanding contributions.

'I want to make them independent, I want them to live better lives’
"Simu exemplifies the potential within each of these girls. She's not just a cricketer; she's a testament to the strength that lies within the visually impaired. More than an authority figure, I believe that I am a brother to these blind girls whose own family abandons them because they believe they are useless and a burden. My mission is to make sure that my sisters are independent.” - Ram KumarStarted in 2020, the Battle for Blindness Foundation has become a sanctuary for visually impaired girls. It not only gives them solace and support, but moulds them into well-rounded citizens who can contribute to the society and nation-building.

"Our mission is not just to provide shelter and support. It's about empowerment, about giving these girls the tools to shape their destinies.”- Ram Kumar

They are at the risk of being taken advantage of on the streets
Ram Kumar's own journey started with a desire to serve his country by joining the armed forces, a dream that took a different path but retained its essence. His kindness, evident even in his early years, laid the foundation for a life dedicated to helping others."We all have a duty to make a difference where we can. I used to save up money to help my classmates pay their fees. I did not think of it as a favour; I thought of it as something that I was born to do - help others.”- Ram Kumar.

Driven by compassion and a deep sense of responsibility, Ram Kumar established the Battle for Blindness Foundation in 2020. His aim was to create a haven for visually impaired girls who faced not only the challenges of blindness but also economic and social disadvantages. The foundation provided not just a roof over their heads but also nourishment, education, and the confidence to dream beyond societal limitations.
"We aim to inspire, educate, and uplift them. Many of our inmates were once on the streets, where they were vulnerable to the prying eyes of predators. But here, they are safe and sound. We make sure of that." - Ram Kumar.
Upskilling them to make them employable
The organisation, through its hostel, computer lab, and Braille library, looks to equip these girls with the skills they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Ram Kumar's commitment wasn't limited to personal assistance; he sought to reshape societal perceptions completely."Blindness should never define limitations. Through awareness campaigns and advocacy, we work towards fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society.”- Ram Kumar

These girls are now on the verge of being thrown out of their ‘home’
The organisation faces financial challenges, requiring funds for essential aspects like rent, food, education, and more. Ram Kumar has now turned to crowdfunding, urging people to contribute to the cause."Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these girls. We will not be able to put a roof over their head without your help. Every contribution counts.” - Ram Kumar

The Battle for Blindness Foundation's story is one of compassion, determination, and the belief that every individual, regardless of their abilities, deserves a chance to lead a dignified life. Ram Kumar's journey from a dream of joining the army to founding an organisation that touched countless lives reflected the transformative power of one person's commitment to making a difference.
