Urgent: This 28-year-old is battling for his life on a ventilator

“I considered myself lucky to have a son like him. Unlike his alcoholic father, who does not contribute to the family's earnings, he has always strived to look after his family. But the saying that ‘an overwhelming share of sufferings are often reserved for the most responsible ones’ has come to pass. He was always the one to comfort us in times of need, ensuring that he would sort things out. Why did he get bitten by a snake? He did no wrong to anyone. I cannot see him battling for his life on a ventilator…” – Gangi, the mother crying profusely

The snake venom affected his respiratory system mandating ventilatory support for his survival

A little over a month ago, while returning home from work, Vicky stepped in a pothole, only to be bitten by a venomous snake on his foot. He was brought home in agony, instead of being taken to the hospital due to the lack of money. Home-based treatment for three days led to the deterioration of Vicky’s condition, as his leg swelling increased dramatically, with evident signs of gangrene (dead tissue) and altering consciousness. He was then rushed to a private hospital in Nagpur, in critical condition, and had to be admitted in the ICU on ventilatory support.

“The next three days are very critical for him and his chances of survival are feeble’ was what the doctors told us. We prayed to all the deities known to us to save my husband.” - Dilpa, wife.

He looks at us with teary eyes but cannot speak due to the tubes in his mouth.

The venom had spread through Vicky’s body due to the delay in his treatment. The doctors removed the dead, gangrenous tissue from his leg and put him on ventilatory support. Slowly, but thankfully Vicky’s body responded to the treatment. However, this was just the beginning of his recovery. His family has already spent 1 lakh INR on his treatment by exhausting all their savings and borrowing loans. They now have no money left.

“He gestures through his eyes, trying to know how we will afford the money for his treatment. We cannot help but stare back helplessly at him. The kids have stopped going to school. We don’t even have money to feed our children.'' - Dilpa, crying inconsolably.

With no source of income, we are in no position to afford the rest of his treatment which is a must for his survival

Vicky is a daily wage farm laborer who earns INR 400 a day. With this meager amount, he supports a family of eight people, including his wife and two school-going children, his parents, and two children of his brother, whose wife passed away due to an illness. The money is barely sufficient to put meals on the plate of the entire family. His wife and mother used to contribute earlier, but stopped working due to sickness.

The doctors have given the family an estimate of INR 6 lakhs for Vicky’s remaining treatment. But with no one from the family capable of earning and none of their relatives agreeing to lend them money, they are in no position to pay for his treatment.

We need your support to save my son

We don’t have anything left and are feeling hopeless in the effort to save my son. I cannot watch him die like this; his wife and children suffer for the rest of their lives. I pray with folded hands to the people to donate any amount they can, so that my son’s life can be saved and he is reunited with his family, who are waiting for him to come home.” - Gangi
