    This fundraiser will benefit

    Child of Brij Sharma

    from Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh

Rukmani and Brij’s son is turning 10 years old today and all he wishes for is to break free from this evil blood disorder that is taking away his childhood. He was just 6 months old when was diagnosed with Thalassemia, a severe blood disease. Ever since then, he has been undergoing transfusions regularly. But now he doesn't have much time left as iron has already reached his liver and if it reaches his heart he won't survive.

I want him to not be scared of dying every minute of his life

“He never had a normal childhood. Every day he swallowed multiple pills and every month we took him to the hospital for transfusions. It’s been 10 long years! Now, we have to take him every week. I want him to live a normal life, play without getting tired and not be scared of dying every minute of his life.”- Brij, father

Frequent blood transfusions have caused an accumulation of too much iron in this little boy’s body which can result in damage to the heart, liver and endocrine system. Only a bone marrow transplant can break this cycle and he needs it on an urgent basis.

How will he live for the rest of his life?

“Lately I have been so afraid thinking- how will he live for the rest of his life? but this transplant can save him from this misery. He can live like a normal child and not gasp for breath at the slightest of activities. He will not be prone to infections or face any complications because of this disease, he will be truly free. But all of this seems like a dream, despite having a cure we are unable to save our child.” - Rukmani, mother

The entire family including close relatives got tested hoping someone would be a match for the transplant. Although they couldn’t find a match, they will soon find one as they have registered for a donor. But the real challenge is arranging funds for the transplant.

Parents can't afford to gift their son a second chance at life

The transplant will cost 30 Lakh rupees. Brij works as a court reader and his monthly income is roughly Rs30,000. Every month, his child’s treatment costs 5-10 thousand depending on the severity of the ailment at that moment. He is susceptible to infections and often falls sick.

On days when he feels weak, we advise him to skip school but he loves learning, drawing, meeting his friends, and he never wants to miss a day. He is such a kind and bright child. It’s his birthday today and the biggest gift we can give him is life itself. But I am struggling to afford this transplant.”- Brij, father
