    This fundraiser will benefit

    Shanvi

    from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

Muniraju looks at his daughter for one last time. He touches her forehead and tells her that he loves her very much. He prays that she recovers soon, and comes home early. He has to leave now, go back to the village. It is the only way he can earn to save her life.

"She has been in the ICU on the ventilator for 8 days now. We get to see her only for 15 minutes every hour.  She still needs time to recover from brain fever. My wife is crying continuously. I don't want to leave them here but there is no other way to pay for her treatment." - Muniraju

She had seizures and nobody even noticed

Shanvi just turned 5 months old. After birth, Sai Prasanna has been staying at her maternal home. As per their culture, the mother and baby have been confined to the house.10 days ago, when Shanvi's temperature spiked, the family went to the hospital. The baby was on paracetamol drops. The next morning, Sai Prasanna went back to the hospital because Shanvi's left eye was looking smaller, only to discover that it was a result of seizures. The family had not seen the baby having seizures the previous night.

"As we were talking to the doctor she again started having fits. We were in Renugunta. They asked us to go to Chennai. Immediately we took an ambulance and moved her. She was in the PICU for 2 days under observation. On the third day, the doctor told that she has brain fever and the infection has damaged one of her kidneys."

This baby is now in a medically induced coma and ventilator support

Shanvi has Acute Encephalitis Syndrome. Her brain is infected. She has seizures, and her organs are failing. She cannot breathe without the ventilator. To avoid deficits from the seizures, Shanvi was put in a medically induced coma. She is being fed through tubes.

"I cannot bear to see her like this. I am allowed to see her only for 15 minutes in an hour. I don't know if she will survive this."

She can recover quickly with continued care, but Muniraju cannot afford to keep her there

Shanvi needs to be in the ICU for a few more days. In addition to the treatment, she is getting physiotherapy. Sai Prasanna left her 3-year-old daughter, Harshini, in the care of her in-laws so she can give her full attention to Shanvi. Muniraju, works as a gardener at a college for Rs. 5000/month. He has not been to work in over a week and fear he may lose the job.

"I had Rs. 40,000 savings. I paid that to the hospital. There is no more money. My relatives also cannot lend us such a huge amount. If I lose my job, then I won't get that Rs. 5000 also. My daughter has gotten better in this week. If I manage to give her the same quality of care, she can come home to us. I might have to take her home if we cannot pay for the treatment."
