Life has been an eternal struggle for Sathyabama. The granddaughter of a freedom fighter and Tamil author, the family fell into hard times. Reduced to penury and a hand to mouth existence, Sathyabama started training children in classical music when a spate of health problems hit her.
Last week, on the way to collect her pension, her sari got caught in the wheels of the motorbike in which she was riding pillion. She sustained grievous head injuries from her fall and had to be admitted to Chettinad hospitals, Chennai where she underwent an emergency brain surgery. The cost of the surgery was pegged at ₹2.5 lakhs and the family had to borrow to pay for the surgery. Her destitute sister is now struggling to take care of her and worrying over the looming debt. Sathyabama has now been shifted to the general ward as more costs for physiotherapy, medicines and uncertainty over prolonged stay at the hospitall continues to be a concern for anxiety. Please help Sathyabama get back on her feet again. It's going to be a long road to recovery.
