On 28 January, this year, 19-year-old Punith Raj was on his way back from work, when his bike crashed into a four-wheeler. The young boy sustained a serious leg injury, and underwent multiple surgeries. But his condition only worsened, when he developed a severe infection on his wound, that was yet to heal.
Punith Raj’s treatment will cost INR 10 lakh rupees, which is an unimaginable sum for his parents to afford. In this moment, your support will mean the world to them. You can help Punith Raj get back on his feet again with your generous contributions.
“I just remember leaving the shop, and heading home. The next thing I knew I was waking up on a hospital bed, to my mother’s inconsolable crying. I had been unconscious for 3 days, and I had no idea what had happened. I just felt the excruciating pain from the large wound on my leg.” - Punith Raj
A faulty surgical procedure caused a severe infection
Punith Raj was rushed to a local hospital in their hometown of Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. Seeing that Covid-19 cases were on the rise at the time, they were unable to get him admitted there and hence opted to take him to a hospital in Chennai, where he underwent 3 surgical procedures.“In February, they inserted a plate in my leg. The following month, I got surgery to fix the displaced bone. Then finally in May, they said I would need plastic surgery. But only weeks later, I knew something wasn’t right. The wound was so itchy and painful. But it couldn’t be helped, because they didn’t let me remain in the hospital for long.” - Punith Raj
He needs multiple surgeries
His wound had festered badly, and caused a severe infection. Panicked, his parents attempted to give him first aid, but when they realised it was no help, they sought out a bigger hospital in Chennai.“They said his infection had spread to his bone. They told us that the plastic surgery had been an extremely faulty one and they found rolled up cotton in his festered wound. They gave us hope that our son will get better with proper treatment. He needs to undergo multiple surgeries, but I don’t have that kind of money.” - Peter, father
His injury has stopped him from achieving his dreams
Driven by his passion to joined the military or become a police officer, Punith Raj had been pursuing a degree at a polytechnic and also worked part-time at a small clothing store, prior to the accident. His eyes once shined bright with big hopes for the future. But all of that was snatched away from him in the blink of an eye.“This traumatic experience has crushed his spirit. I can see that he’s in so much pain, but he never cries or complains, because he is afraid that it will upset me even more. I have to hide my tears in front of him. I can’t stand to see him like this... Why does he have to suffer so much?” - Amudha, mother
They don’t have the means to afford their son’s expensive surgery
Peter used to work at a tile factory in Bangalore, while Amudha worked as a cleaner at a local school. But they were both forced to quit their job to look after their son, after his accident. Currently, the family is dependent on their elder daughter’s meagre income to get by. Everything they’ve been able to spend so far was because of help from their family and friends. Now, they cannot bear the rest of Punith Raj’s medical expenses.Punith Raj’s treatment will cost INR 10 lakh rupees, which is an unimaginable sum for his parents to afford.
