“Day and night, it is my mother or my father who sit beside me, just to ensure my smallest needs are taken care of. At an age when they should be taking my service, it is them serving me twenty-four hours, feeding me and even cleaning my excretion”. – Pranab Das, Patient.

It Started With Wounds Around His Knees
Five years back Pranab Das who was running his own barber shop in a small village in Howrah, West Bengal, could not have even imagined, that life could turn out so unfair. He just got married, and along with his wife, was staying with his parents and his younger brother.
Pranab says, “Everything was going fine until there were wounds around each knee. Initially I didn’t take them seriously, but then after few days when wounds did not start healing at all, I went to a doctor. It took a year for the wounds to heal, and the moment I got rid of the wounds, I developed bad cough.”

The Doctors Confirmed, He Had Issue With Lungs
Realising the cough to be unusual, and also the fact that he was facing difficulty in breathing, Pranav consulted few doctors near his home. The doctors understood some issue with lungs, and suggested Pranav to consult specialists from Kolkata.
Narrating about the days, Pranab says, “We got tensed when the doctors said the issue could be related to lungs. My father was determined that I should not take any risk and consult the best doctor, and that’s why I approached PG hospital Kolkata. The doctors did all kind of tests and confirmed that the issue was with lungs, and hence I started getting treatment from there.”

His Condition Did Not Improve Even After Three Years Of Treatment
And since then, for three long years Pranab took treatment at PG hospital Kolkata. Meanwhile he continued working at his barbershop to take care of the prolonging medical expenses, and to contribute in running the household. But even after three years of treatment Pranab’s condition did not improve, rather his condition worsened further, and he would find difficulty even to walk a small distance from his home.
Pranab further says, “In these three years we lost everything. All our savings that we acquired after many years of hard work were used up. My parents even sold their land, and my mother sold her jewellery. In between all these my wife also left me. And then, there I was, more sick and more tired.”

The Doctors Said Lung Transplant Is The Only Way To Save Pranab From Dying
Unable to bear any longer Pranab’s miserable condition, his father brought him to Bangalore, in search of hope and a solution. But the doctor’s diagnosis in Bangalore further broke their heart, when the doctor declared that 75% of Pranab’s lungs was damaged, and a Lung Transplant is the only way out to save Pranab from dying.
While controlling his tears, Pranab says, “I still remember my father’s helpless eyes, when the doctor told us that the transplant will cost minimum 35 lakhs. On our way from Bangalore to Kolkata, my father did not utter a word to stay strong in front of me. But I know the moment he reached home he cried the entire night. I would have died long back. It is only because of my parents that I am fighting. Please help us. Please give me a chance to live.”
