‘I am in my 20s but I feel like an old man due to breathlessness and pain’

Mohanraj, a B.E. Mechanical Engineering graduate, once worked in IT documentation, earning a decent salary. His health began failing last year with fever and severe headaches, and further tests revealed bad news: nearly 80% of his lungs were damaged. The only hope doctors have given him is a lung transplant. For the past three months, he has not been able to survive without oxygen support. Even a short walk or lying down without it leaves him breathless.

Since then, my life has been nothing but tubes, oxygen cylinders, and pain.  They have become like a lifeline that follows me everywhere. I am just 27, but I live like an old man waiting for his end. ‘All I want is to live and take care of my parents…but I am jobless and cannot even afford oxygen to survive’

Mohanraj’s parents, Amutha (45) and Govinda Raj (50), work as daily wage labourers. He is their only son, their only hope, and they break down fearing that they may lose him before his time. To keep him alive, the family has already spent over ₹4 lakhs, selling jewellery and borrowing from relatives and friends. Even the oxygen cylinders he depends on are becoming hard to afford.
