Brain Damage Has Left This 9-Year-Old Girl Unconscious And Motionless

9-year-old Mamatha, is a young, cheerful and intelligent girl. She was an active child and her parents were surprised by her extraordinary memory power. She remembered everything, right from the rhymes she studied in kindergarten to the new lessons she learnt recently. She is the only child of Santha Kumar and Chandra and they were determined to give her the best education. Her parents felt very proud when she read English and spoke fluently with her relatives and friends. One day, little Mamatha got a high fever and complained of a severe headache. Even before her parents could understand what was happening to her, she was admitted to ICU. It has been 2 weeks since, and Mamatha can barely open her eyes. Her parents wait every minute for her to get back to consciousness, but when she does, it is only for a short while.

"The last thing she said to me before she lost conciousness is 'appa, I'm scared, I can't bear the pain." Every day I think of this, her voice is still ringing in my ears. " - Santha Kumar, Father.

In a short span of time, Mamatha lost consciousness and movement in her body due to brain damage

Mamatha had reduced movement and power in her arms and legs. She was referred for an MRI scan and this revealed brain damage. Further tests revealed that she was suffering from Tubercular Meningitis, a condition caused by bacteria, that travel through the bloodstream and infect other organs and tissues, also to the meninges, which are the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This can have long-term effects such as brain damage, epilepsy, paralysis and hearing loss.

Little Mamatha needs prolonged treatment to recover completely

Mamatha had an urgent surgery to remove the fluid accumulation in her brain. She regained consciousness after 3 days, but she was not able to speak. She is too weak to respond to her parents' calling out to her. While she's on the road to recovery, she has a long way to go. She needs treatment for at least 2 more weeks without which she'll lose her life.

"She might have to relearn everything: speaking, writing, eating. I dread the thought of my daughter struggling to speak and her life confined to home and hospital. The doctors have assured us that she will be back to normal with continued treatment. I can do anything for her but I can't bear to see her suffering at this age. All we hope for now is to keep her alive at any cost." - Chandra, Mother.

Poor father has tried everything possible to arrange for funds, yet it is not enough

Santha Kumar works as an office assistant in a private company. With his meager income, he was living a very modest life with his wife and children. He worked hard and saved every rupee for his daughter's education. Mamatha's diagnosis came as a big blow to him.  He was not prepared for it, both emotionally and financially. He borrowed money from his friends and family for the tests and medicines and has nothing left now to continue the treatment.

Mamatha with her mother before she fell sick

"She used to ask me to send her to dance class. I never had money to send her to summer camps or any extra classes, I was saving money for it, but now I've even used that. I sold my wife's jewelry. I did everything that I could do but it is not enough. All I have is my daughter. She is my life but I'm watching her suffer helplessly." - Santha Kumar.
