For as long as I have been a runner, I have run at Kaikondrahalli lake. It is a boon to live close to a lung-space like this and be able to run here whenever I feel like.
Kaikondrahalli lake is a beautiful 48 acre lake in Bengaluru with myriad species of birds and reptiles in the middle of the city. Beside being a water catchment, source of fish for local fishermen and fodder for cattle, it is the patch of greenery where neighbourhood residents can come out for a breath of fresh air. Without places like Kaikondrahalli lake, we runners will have no places in the city to train.
However, despite all the positives, the lake has its share of problems such as encroachment in buffer zones, sewage inflow and shortage of maintenance funds. The lake belongs to BBMP however it is completely dependent on voluntary donations from the surrounding community for its upkeep. Day to day maintenance of the lake is looked after by a not for profit trust MAPSAS, consisting entirely of community members. The monthly expenses include gardening, cleaning and security apart from yearly activities such as de-weeding. Due to crunch in funds, there has been a forced cut in numbers in security and gardening staff. This will eventually affect the upkeep of the lake.
If you are a runner or a nature enthusiast, please help me raise funds for the upkeep of this runner's paradise. We cannot afford to let this beautiful lake go down the drains!
