“To fight for my country had always been my dream. Since my childhood, I used to take pleasure in helping others in need. I felt the same pleasure when I rescued the pilgrims in Kashmir when their bus met with an accident on their way to Amarnath Yatra. But today I am feeling helpless, as I am not able to protect my own nine-month-old baby when he is fighting the most difficult battle of his life. This Durga Puja I am desperately praying to Devi to bring back my son's life.” - Susobhan Chel

The Little One Got Fever Which Was Not Coming Down
Susobhan Chel is a soldier in Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a Central Armed Police Force of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs. His job took him to places and also to many dangerous missions. He believes in this thrill his life exists, and he cannot stop thanking his stars for that. And few months back with the birth of his son his happiness knew no bound, until the deadly fever which gripped his son badly.
Susobhan says, “Initially my family thought it to be a normal fever and gave medicine from a local doctor. But the medicines did not work, and hence they took him to a specialist. But the specialist also thought it to be Urinary Tract Infection, and treated him for the same.”

Even After Several Efforts The Doctors Were Not Able To Diagnose The Child’s Condition
However, when the medicine from specialists did not work, the family took him to a hospital. After staying for almost a month in PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit), the child did not get relief and the fever came back just two days after his discharge.Narrating the days Susobhan says, “No doctor, no hospital was able to diagnose my son’s situation. My family had tried everything possible, from moving my son hospital to hospital to clinic to clinic. The little one even had to make the strenuous journey of 65 kilometres so that quick diagnosis could happen. But every where there was confusion. Finally, I applied for leave and took him to Chennai.”

The Child Has Been Suffering From A Rare Genetic Disorder
At Chennai also, things did not turn out easy for them. Although the child was admitted at the hospital the moment they reached Chennai, but there also the doctors had a tough time diagnosing the actual cause of fever, and only after fifteen days of multiple tests, they figured out that the child was suffering from CGD (Chronic Granulomatous Disease) – a rare genetic immune disorder where white blood cell cannot effectively kill bacteria and fungi.Susobhan further says, “They did tests after tests, but every day we heard the same news, ‘Nothing confirmed yet’. I could see my little one was in acute pain. And finally after two weeks, just for the sake of assurance, when the doctors did the test, it was found out that my son was actually on the verge of life and death.”

The Baby Needs Stem Cell Transplant Which Will Cost 30 Lakhs Rupees
Adding to their misery, the moment after the diagnosis was confirmed, the child’s condition worsened further and he lost his consciousness. The doctors also gave up hope, and the child was put on ventilation for 20 long days. But thankfully, the child’s condition has revived a bit, and the doctors have said this is the only chance of saving the baby through bone marrow transplant and hence has to be done immediately.

Holding his tears Susobhan says, “Though doctor has given us hope, but right now I really don’t know how it is going to be possible. So far, we have spent all our savings and have taken loans through office and also from fellow villagers. The transplant is going to cost 30 lakhs, and I don’t have any means to arrange funds even to keep him in hospital. Now, you are my only hope. Please help me. Please don’t let my son die.”
