“Every year when I tie Rakhi during Raksha Bandhan, my brother would say, ‘Didi, for this year also you make a note in your diary whatever you want. When I will grow up and start earning, I will check your diary and buy those gifts for you.’ This year also I have bought Rakhi, and hope that by Raksha Bandhan my parents will be able arrange the money required to save him from Aplastic Anaemia.” – Elder sister.

He Suddenly Experienced Severe Chest Pain And Fell Down On The Ground

Unlike any 15-year-old child who would often seem either playing, or quarrelling, or having fun with their sibling, this 15-year-old is having the toughest time in her life. She along with her parents are fighting day and night with every strength, to save her 11-year-old brother who is diagnosed with a rare condition called Aplastic Anaemia – where the bone marrow doesn't produce enough new blood cells, and hence cannot produce enough red and white blood cells, and platelets.

She says, “Until six-seven months back, he was doing just fine. We would go to school and would play together. But since six-seven months, he had become little less active. He had also lost weight. Initially we thought it was normal weakness. But my parents realised something was really wrong, when one day while playing with his friends, he suddenly experienced severe chest pain and fell down on the ground.”

The Doctors Found Out That The Child Was Suffering From Aplastic Anaemia

His parents took him to a local doctor. The doctor did a blood test, which revealed that his haemoglobin count had come down to as low as 4.5 g/dl. The medicine which the doctor gave did not work, and after few days, he again experienced chest pain.
Recalling the day, she says, “This time my parents took him to a specialist. It was found out his haemoglobin had come down further. Without wasting time, my parents rushed him to a bigger hospital in Lucknow. And it was at Lucknow the doctors found out that my brother had been suffering from Aplastic Anaemia.”

He Started Bleeding Through Mouth

Although the diagnosis broke their heart, but these parents gathered courage and put all their focus to provide the best treatment; and bring him out of the disease as soon as possible. And after few days of treatment, when his blood count got stabilised, he was finally discharged after more than two-weeks of hospitalisation.

With a worried face, she further says, “We thought that the treatment would improve his health to some extent. But unfortunately, his condition worsened further. And this time he started bleeding through his mouth, just few days after we got him home.”

He Can Only Be Saved By Bone Marrow Transplant, Which Will Cost More Than Twenty Lakhs

Having no hospital with proper facilities in his hometown, his parents took him to Lucknow on the same night. But unfortunately, the Government hospital where he was treated last time did not have beds available. After much struggle, he was finally admitted at Medanta. But even after seventeen days of hospitalization, his blood count is still unstable, and his hemoglobin and platelet counts are dropping continuously. And now Bone Marrow Transplant is the only way to save him, which will cost more than twenty lakhs.

“Since his condition is very serious, the doctors have told my parents that he needs transplant within 10-15 days, else he won’t survive. My parents are also sick. My father is on dialysis, and my mother had a surgery recently.  But they have stopped their treatment to care for my brother.” – says the sister.
