Biplab Is A Loving Son, Father And Husband

Biplab Kundu is a resident of a small town near Kolkata. He runs his own medical shop and stays with his elderly mother, his wife, and his nine-year-old son. For his family, he is not only their sole financial support but also the pillar of their existence. He used to work hard day and night to fulfill every wish of his loving family.

Amrita says, “Biplab would often say, ‘I don’t seek anything for myself. All of your happiness is the only thing I seek for.’ And until few days before he fell sick, he was working hard so that he could buy us gifts for Durga puja.”

His Oxygen Level Dropped Down To 8%

However, though Biplab was excited for Durga Puja, but his health started deteriorating from the second week of September. It started with what looked like usual fever, cough and cold, soon his condition worsened to the extreme point, and even after consulting with a local doctor, his symptoms did not subside, and by midnight he started spilling blood through cough and was not able to breathe.

Amrita narrates, “I called up everyone possible at that hour and somehow took him to hospital. There initially they found deep ulcer in the digestive tract, but later it was revealed he was suffering from severe pneumonia. His condition worsened so much that his oxygen level reduced to 8% and was not responding to any medicines. And since then, he has been put into ventilation.”

Family Can’t Afford His Life-Saving Support

Seeing that the patient was not responding to any kind of treatment, the doctors finally after being left with no option, started ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) on the patient, which is a life-support system that temporarily takes over the function of the lungs by pumping blood out of the body to an external machine that adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide before returning the blood to the body. And thus, allowing the lungs to rest and recover. But this procedure is costly, and Biplab’s family, who recently suffered a financial drain owing to his mother-in-law’s treatment, has no means to continue the treatment.


While crying inconsolably, Amrita says, “So far it is because of our friends and relatives that I have been able to continue the treatment. But now, after so many days of hospitalization, all our means are slowly getting over. And with his condition still critical, I need more funds than I have already spent. But I don’t have any support left. Please help me. Please don’t let my husband die."
