It was a regular school day. 7-year-old Aditya Meshram was walking briskly in his school grounds, when his right leg collided with a rock and he fell. He was rushed to a small medical centre near the school, as he was in a lot of pain and there was blood loss too. The local doctor immediately plastered the area and even advised his parents to apply a herbal cream on it. They did as advised, not realizing that it would have devastating consequences for their poor son.
The swelling gave way to infection, and now this child stands to lose his leg
For the first few days after the incident, little Aditya was fine. His leg did not hurt as much as it did when he'd hurt himself, although there was significant swelling present. He even went to school and resumed his normal routine until one day the swelling got worse. He even ran a fever, which became worse as the hours passed. His parents rushed him to another hospital this time, where they learnt the horrible truth of Aditya’s condition.“The doctors were horrified to see that his wound had been infected under the plaster. The whole right leg had been affected. They told us that he required antibiotics and not herbal ointments for the injury. As poor, uneducated and illiterate parents, we didn’t know what we were doing! And now, our son is suffering.” - Nitesh, father.
Aditya needs surgery and further hospitalization, but it is beyond his parents’ means
Aditya's father, Nitesh, works as a farmer who tills others’ lands and does menial labour to make ends meet. Their family of four live in a jhopdi (hut) in their village. Nitesh does not have the documents required to apply for government aided housing and had been struggling to afford two square-meals for his family, when Aditya’s accident took place. Ever since then, he’s had to beg and borrow money to take Aditya for his hospital visits. He cannot afford the surgery that would make his son better and enable him to walk again.“I have spent more than Rs 70,000 till now. For a person who earns less than Rs 400 a day, this is huge. I am in debt, and don’t know how I’ll pay the loan back. I need close to Rs 2 lakhs for Aditya’s surgery, but it seems beyond my reach. Please help me.” - Nitesh, tearfully.
