I had visited Cyclone Gaja impacted villages in Nagappatinam district, Vedaranyam Taluk in Tamil Nadu. The destruction caused by the cyclone is huge. The grave situation was not felt by outside world as no roads to reach, no power or no mobile networks for 10 days after the eye of cyclone crossed this area and was completely cut off from rest of the world until people started visiting conveying the ground reality to the world.
More than million coconut , mango, and other trees uprooted or broken in nagai district alone . This area is full of farmers mainly depend on income from coconut , mango , vegitables, other trees and cattle. They lost all the livelihood.
More than 100,000 people lost their houses (mainly huts , roof with tiles or sheets) , cattle sheds , motor sheds, sheds for coconuts , rice fields etc.
The fishermen in these villages lost their nets , fiber boats and houses .
People are in great distress as they believe that it will take minimum 10 years to come back to normal as the grown up coconut , mango, cheshew trees are aged between 20 to 50 years old and giving steady income month on month and also yearly.
I belong to this area and my parents live there .Just to give an example , My family lost 3 sheds , 2 houses/kitchen with tiles roof , electric motors , about 100+ coconut trees and few hundred mango and other trees. This is similar situation for most of the farmers in my village Naluvethapathy and nearby villages Pushpavanam , Vellapallam and all the green coastal villages in Nagapattinam district.
People are still in camps as there is no electricity ,no essential supply and no house for many . Adding to their owes , it is raining and there are still rain and depression/cyclone warning for these areas.
Please refer the the video (youtube link : https://youtu.be/0xxvpsDpVFI ) of my destroyed green village that I have taken last Sunday[25/11/2018] in my mobile while meeting and giving small relief items to the affected people .
Any support to regrow the trees will be of great help in the impacted village Nephropathy and its people . Refer the you tube link : https://youtu.be/2lEx7KdWoeU to see how this village was prior to Gaja cyclone destruction.
My village Naluvethpathy is Guinness world record holder for planting 100,000 trees in 24 hours near seashore . Now all these trees are also lost .
Fund raised for : The Village 'Naluvethpathy' in Vedranyam Taluk , Nagapattinam District in Tamil Nadu
Fund will be used for : 600 families
How the money will be spent : Each family will receive 10 coconut plants each .
Each plant will cost approximately Rs.100 . Hence, 600x10x100 = 6,00,000 Rs
In addition to this , 10 petrol based tree cutters( 10 x 6000=Rs.60,000) will provided to cut and clear their trees before planing the new saplings.
