Help Gowrishwari undergo Liver Transplant

I am Eswar and I am here to raise funds for Liver Transplant that has been recommended to my mother, Gowrishwari.

My mother, Gowrishwari, 52 years old, was diagnosed with Liver Cirrohsis, a condition in which the liver does not function properly due to long term damage. It involves loss of liver cells and irreversible scarring of liver.

Her health condition is rapidly deteriorating despite being on an aggressive medication. We have consulted multiple doctors in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad, and they have strongly recommended her to undergo Liver Transplant at the earliest, the only option to prolong her life. She is currently undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals, Visakhapatnam.

She is registered under Jeevandan Scheme in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, to get a cadaveric organ donor. She has already undergone the pre-transplant assessment tests and got clearances from multi-disciplinary team of doctors. We are waiting to find a suitable cadaver donor. The entire procedure i.e. from finding a cadaver organ, transplantation surgery to recovery is expected to last several months, depending on the patient’s condition and post-operative care.

The expected cost break-up for the total procedure is as follows:

1. Pre-transplant Assessment: Rs. 1,50,000/-
This involves a detailed assessment conducted by a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, to ensure her fitness to undergo Liver Transplantation surgery.

2. Liver Transplant Surgery: Rs. 27,25,000/-
Based on the availability of cadaveric organ, the transplant surgery would be done in Apollo Hospitals in Visakhapatnam/ Hyderabad/ Chennai/ Bangalore.

3. Post Operation Rehabilitation, Recovery, Follow-ups: Rs.10,00,000/-
An uncomplicated transplant involves stay in the transplantation ICU for 10-12 days. Discussions and consultations with liver transplant patients and their families suggest that post-op complications require extended stays in the hospital and multiple expensive tests even after discharge from the hospital for few months.

We have been spending huge amounts for the past 6 months for her treatment, expensive medication and pre-transplant assessment tests, at multiple hospitals. We have exhausted all our savings for her treatment till now and would need external help to handle this difficult situation.

We urge everyone of you to come forward and help us raise the required amount. Any contributions from your end have the power to offer a new lease of life for my mother. With the financing of the transplant taken care of, my family will have one less reason to worry and we can focus all our efforts in ensuring the best medical care for her.

Please contribute and keep sharing this campaign link with your friends and family to spread the word out. I am extremely grateful to all the people who express solidarity and extend help to my family during such a difficult time.

Ask for an update

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for your support and wishes.

Mother got discharged from hospital yesterday. It’s been three weeks since the surgery is done. As I have told you in the last update, she was kept in Isolated Transplant ICU post-surgery. She was there for about 11-12 days and then shifted to Isolated Room. The recovery so far is not as fast as it is expected to be, but she is improving, as explained by the doctors. She is cooperating for all the necessary investigations and medications. We could observe changes in her condition as the days pass. She is now able to walk a few steps within the room, with the support of walker. She still has symptoms of delirium with some disoriented and disturbed talk, but the clarity in her words and thoughts is improving day-by-day. Though Liver Enzymes have shot up post-surgery, they have started coming down later and are trending towards normalcy now. She has started having soft food and liquids orally and her digestive system is working fine.

By the time she returned home, we have prepared an isolated environment for her. Doctors have strictly advised us to postpone visits by any of the relatives/ friends at least for a period of 3-6 months, in order to prevent infections. Her medication includes immuno-suppressants, which lowers her immune system, to avoid rejection of the new organ by her own immune system. This lowered immunity makes her more vulnerable for infections and hence utmost care needs to be taken in the first year post surgery leaving no chance for any contamination/ infection. A combination of drugs have been prescribed to strike a balance between rejection and infection. We need to get multiple tests done every week for about 6 months and update the doctors with the reports, and accordingly they will change the medication.
By God’s grace, and wishes and support from you all, we could get a cadaver organ, and got her operation done on time. We still have a long way to go for her complete recovery. We are hopeful, at home, her recovery would be much better and faster.

I would like to reach out to you all individually and give you an update soon, once I get some comfortable time.

Once again, our hearty thanks to each one of you for supporting us in the time of need. Without your support and prayers, this wouldn’t have been possible. Keep her in your prayers and wish for her speedy recovery.

Regards,
Eswar

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for your support and wishes.
I am very happy to inform you all that Mother's Liver Transplant Surgery is finally done. We have got a cadaver liver, allotted to Mother, in Visakhapatnam, last Saturday. We have immediately admitted her in Apollo Hospital, Visakhapatnam. A team of surgeons from Chennai and Hyderabad have come and did the surgery on the same day. It took about 8-9 hrs for the surgery, and mother got shifted to Isolated Transplant ICU immediately after the surgery.

Doctors informed us that the surgery went well, and she needs to be monitored closely for about 7-8 days in the ICU. She was on ventilator support for about 30hrs. Currently she is on oxygen support. Though we are not allowed into the isolated ICU to see/talk to her, we got to know from the doctors that she is actively following all the instructions given by the doctors and the support staff. They will shift her to isolated room in few days, after ensuring that there are no other complications. Discharge from Hospital might take 10 more days.

I will keep you posted on her condition and any other developments. Apologies for this delayed update, we were totally occupied with the arrangements before and after the surgery, and hence the delay.

Our hearty thanks to each one of you for supporting us in this time of need. Without your support and prayers, this wouldn't have been possible. Keep her in your prayers and wish for her speedy recovery.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for your support and wishes.

I would like to share with you some recent developments since my last update. While the illness continues to progress, complications increase. Mom has shown mild signs of Hepatic Encephalopathy last week, which is a syndrome observed in patients with Liver Cirrhosis. We have immediately consulted the doctors and they suggested changes in medication.  With all the aggressive medication, her condition is better now. In order to avoid water accumulation and other complications, we are giving her Albumin injections once in 3 days. She continues to remain positive and is mentally ready for the surgery.
Received a positive update from Apollo Visakhapatnam yesterday, that my mother is on top of the waitlist of patients registered for organ. The next available B+ ve organ in Visakhapatnam, would be allotted to her, hopefully. To increase the probability of finding an organ, we have also registered her in two other states, Tamil Nadu (Chennai) and Karnataka (Bangalore), apart from AP and Telangana. We are waiting to hear from one of these places soon.
Our heartfelt thanks to the entire IIM Trichy and GITAM fraterity for coming forward to support us in these difficult times. We are extremely grateful for your unconditional support. We have a long way to go and I request you to keep spreading the message, and continuing to support us in raising the fund required.

Thanks to each one of you for your generous help and good wishes!!
