Meet Dikhita Borah, our brilliant young IDIA scholar who has secured admission at a leading law school, National Law University, Assam.
Dikhita hails from a small village called Hathi Gaon in North Guwahati, Assam. She has seen some strife in the family: her parents separated when Dikhita was a child, and her father has not been heard from since 2009. Dikhita's mother and two sisters struggle to make ends meets, managing to put together a monthly sum of INR 8,000 for the four of them.
Her past, and difficult financial situation have not deterred Dikhita’s focus and motivation in the least. She is dedicated to her goal of becoming an environmental lawyer, and to be a voice of her community. So committed is she to this vision that she would sail across the Brahmaputra river everyday (even on rainy days!) to attend her law exam tutorial sessions on the opposite bank.
Currently, IDIA is struggling to cover Dikhita's educational expenses. The cost of completing a legal education at National Law University, Assam, inclusive of fees, related costs and nominal living expenses, is around INR 3.5 lakhs per annum.
With your help, we can help Dikhita secure a good quality legal education and make a life for herself and the community she represents! Students from north-eastern region of India are barely represented in national law schools today. Graduates of national law schools have access to strong legal and power corridors and they ultimately go on to shape the legal framework of the country. By helping Dikhita, you are not only educating her but also helping her empower her community, which is often isolated and discriminated against and which is also plagued with turmoil and unrest.

Note: Dikhita received free training for law entrance exams by volunteers from Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to legal education (IDIA), a non-profit that focuses on bringing more students from underprivileged backgrounds into the premier legal educational institutions of the country, which are frequently home to elite student bodies.
