Supriya is a bright example of how a small child from the slums of the capital city, despite all odds, financial instability and social hurdles, can aspire to be a professional. If provided with proper resources, guidance and a comfortable learning environment, she can achieve great heights in her life.
Manisha is a single mother who is struggling to raise her children after years of social exploitation she has faced. Here’s her story as she shares with our team. “I got separated from my husband over 3 years ago. He was an alcoholic and used to hit me after getting drunk. I have two daughters staying with me at my parents' place. I am concerned about their future. I have crossed 29 and want to be financially independent at this stage. I got to know about LECIN’s community school in Okhla, which I decided to join and and devote my time for my own development. They have been training me, teaching me as well as my daughters the basics of English, Hindi and Maths. I feel comfortable working with them. It will be a great opportunity for me if I am appointed as a full time teacher in this community school. I can now think of earning while contributing to a social cause.”
Who are we and how do we work?
Let’s Educate Children In Need or simply, LECIN, is a youth led non-governmental organisation based in Delhi-NCR working towards providing quality education since 2015, to the children from low income communities.
LECIN, recently started its first Community school in the slums of Okhla in March 2019, where, over 120 children have been enrolled till date from the age 2.5 to 25 years old. We aim to enrol at least 300 students by the end of 2019.
Our students and their teaching sessions are divided into two groups -
1. Play group (pre school) - Children upto the age of 6, who are not enrolled in any school yet. They are taught to read, write and solve puzzles.
2. Students who are enrolled in some government schools - They attend our after-school sessions where they are taught the basics of Maths, English, Hindi and Science.
Young facilitators and teachers are appointed and are well trained to teach students of all ages, be creative and use different pedagogies to deliver effective and interactive sessions so that all the students are looked upon and their records of learning are maintained.
Team LECIN has worked hard over the years to build its first community school and plan its functioning to help people like Supriya and Manisha obtain quality education and provide them with the required resources and guidance. Heading towards our long term goals of building more such community schools in various parts of Delhi and NCR, and for the smooth running of the one in Okhla, we require funds for equipment and services which include :
● Rent for the place
● Water and electricity
● Salaries of the teachers
● Basic stationary, books and supplies for the students
● Basic furniture, Toys and infrastructure
● Occasional educational trips and competitions
We invite you to be a part of a beautiful journey! Contribute your part in building a developed nation by extending your support to these children.
