There are two sides to a coin. Always.
We know Thiruvanmiyur, in South Chennai, 15 mins from Besant Nagar. Amazing temples, high-rise buildings, S2 Cinemas—it just feels like so much is right about the place, that we fail to see the other side.
Zoom in, See the other side.
Walk down the lane from Marundeeshwarar Temple, you will see Mettu Street. Walk further towards the beach, you will see the community we work with. Students here lack the basic facilities at home to help study. They fight the immense odds that are stacked up against them, and they fight them remarkably, these unsung heroes of the tale. Always with wide grins coloring their cheeks. Their parents are daily wage workers and are always in the middle of an existential crisis. This leads to students having broken homes, troubled homes, violent homes and homes that are not conducive to their learning.
To aid the citizens of tomorrow and hence, the community, the students want to open a learning center, which will initially be open for the students to come spend time productively. Eventually, this could be the community hub for self-help groups, global exposure, wider horizons...
The possibilities are limitless.
What is productivity?
Every student will define it for herself or himself for a given day.
They can do their homework.
They can teach their peers.
They can play board games.
They can know the world more through the internet and books.
They can come read books from the library.
They can come learn arts, science, math and anything else under the sun.
Who are We?
We are Teach For India Fellows, alums and managers who have worked with the government school near the community collectively for the past 6 years. We are trying to develop a sustainable solution for increasing the productive time of a child in the community. And by sustainability, we mean a space that doesn't depend on our physical presence in order to function and progress.
Students want such spaces to grow in the community and include parent leaders in the near future, developing a proactive community that solves its problems through collective action.
When do we need the funds?
By September 2018, we need the funds.
How is the money being used?
We are working towards expanding our community center to cater to a larger group of children, this year we are catering to 150 children! This expansion comes in light of our oldest students preparing to give their first public exams. This is a crucial point for them as they will each be the first to have reached this milestone within their families.
Rent for one month - 20,000 (To accommodate 150 children)
Consumables like electricity, water, and emergency expenses (for three months) - 3,000
Rental advance - 60,000
*All costs are for 11 months*
Rent for May-March - 2,20,000
We have already set up a community library with nearly 500 books.
We have run the center from November 2017 - April 2018 successfully. The past year we catered to roughly 40 students.
If you would like to be a part of this community’s first step towards a better tomorrow, please contribute using the link below and/or share it with your contacts. The money we are trying to raise collectively forms the means for covering costs for year 2018-19.
Phase-2 is towards sustainability, for which we will start raising the capital soon. (After the success of this campaign)
Help us make a dent in these children's lives, we can help you with access to million smiles.
We will regularly post updates, share the address of the center so that interested donors can come visit us anytime. Students will never be in the center without the supervision of an adult. Do call us and drop in at any time, children will happily welcome you.
