*Update*

To all the wonderful supporters,

Thanks so much for your contributions! We are super thrilled that we were able to reach out to about six teams who have been relentlessly working in helping the flood victims. These super volunteers have utilized our funds (as well as funds from other supporters) to make a positive impact:

Vathsalya is dedicated towards the welfare of children in the underprivileged section of our society. From the coordinator Radha Srinivasan:

During the recent rains and flood havoc we have been operating in different areas of the city to bring succor and hope to the people of the lower social strata.

We are also working towards long time rehabilitation of young children who are distressed by this natural calamity. Our endeavour to help these children to restart their scholastic activities as soon as the schools restart. At this time we are assessing the needs and quantum of help required in this area. We cover areas on OMR, ECR, Koturpuram, Virugambakkam, Gandhinagar, Thiruvottiyur and West Mambalam. We identify areas where no relief work has been done and tha detected are predominantly children and older adults, to help in rehabilitation.

Sakthivel and his team of volunteers have a group on Facebook called TamilNadu- Chennai Rains Helpline 1913 where anyone who posts for help has been sent a response. From rescue measures to relief measures they have been on top of things the last few days. So much so that they have a few puppies and birds in their house right now who lost  their homes during the floods. Milaap funds were utilzed to buy medical supplies and sanitation kits.

Charan Saravana has been working towards relief and rehabilitation of cattle herds in Pallikaranai area of around 300 plus cattle... Supporting on three counts 1. Veterinary camp 2. Fodder supply 3. Supplement supply for the needy.

Prabu Raja has also been working with his team to provide essentials such as blankets and clothes to those affected.

Thanks so much for all your help. Do continue spreading the word and we will keep you updated.

As you may have heard,  the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India has been affected badly because of severe flooding from the highest rainfall it has seen in 114 years. Chennai is 4th largest metropolitan city with over 4.3 million people. Over 20% of the Indians from our Ross class call this our hometown - with direct or extended families still living there (you might know some of us – Ashwin, Sriram, Archit, Aswin, Sruthi, Mrinalini, Harsha, Preetha, Sneha).

Chennai has been declared a disaster zone and the Army, Navy teams have been brought in for rescue operations. Thousands of people have been evacuated and require immediate food, drinking water and medical supplies. The low lying areas and many homes have been completely submerged, leaving people stranded on the rooftops/ terraces without enough food, water, electricity or medical supplies. So far, we have lost over 250 people to the calamity.

Here is where we need your help.

The victims of Chennai need essentials such as food, drinking water, and medical supplies. Your donation can help them get these items. We have been routing funds and working with  Janani Viswanathan and her AMAZING team and network with ground operations in Chennai, distributing food packets, blankets, basic medicines, milk, drinking water and other essentials.

Please click on this link on the top right 'Make Payment" to make a donation! We will update everyone with how much we have raised.
