Bethany School was started in 1971 as a home school for the very poor children with only 29 children in Primary school by a group of individuals with little income but with a big heart.
Today the school has progressed to Higher secondary school with 300 students enrolled all from very poor families who struggle to pay a school fee of Rs.300/PM. Most of which really has to be written off and no organization from behind.
With 25 teachers on staff, Government grants of only Rs. 60000/-PM, it is a struggle to keep the school in operation. It needs an additional one lakh rupees a month. The sponsoring body of Bethany Higher Secondary School has struggled to build the infrastructure and somehow manage to do it as members are all small and low income people.
Most parents are either daily wage earner, construction workers with , low income and coming from mostly obc's and other backward class, migrating from the nearby state of assam, tripura and other places. Most of them struggle to keep their children in school, though the school does not make any demands on them. Some children walked two hours in the morning to come and 1.5 hours going back and they are as young as 5 years old. Some parents, whose income is as low as Rs. 150/- a day but need to educate their children, so we can understand the plight. The school is not run by any kind of mission, religious or otherwise but only by a group of people who wanted to give back to the society. The teachers are a dedicated group of people, getting salary as low as 6000/- and maximum of 18.000/- per month though very qualified.
It does not have any government grant for the high school but only 33000/- for the primary and 33000/- for the upper priary and none from the SSA. Maybe you can understand the need to help so they will not drop out. The school till date has produced few bank managers, few school teachers and a few civil servants and of course a whole lot of daily workforce. PLEASE HELP.
