Watching women languish in mental hospitals and others whithering away on the streets of kolkata was
the starting point of a long conversation 15 years ago, that resulted in a desire to do something.
The solution seemed obvious: setting up a shelter and rehabilitation place for these women to give
them a second chance at life with dignity.
By 2010, we had opened the gates of a rehabilitation commune as a pilot project. By 2014, success was
evident based on the recovery of 60% of the residents we expanded our operations and shifted to our
present location in Bererkhal, near jibantala, S 24 PGS in West Bengal.
Our mission is based on these principles
Adopt (rescue)
Care ( food clothing shelter treatment)
Teach( hygiene, life skills)
Survive ( learning vocational skills to enable independent living )
If we are lucky some of these women are accepted back into their homes.
Here is one of our success stories.
Rupa, as we named her because she couldn’t remember her name , was found wandering the streets
and back alleys of Sealdah Railway station earlier this year. She was paranoid, aggressive and violent
when approached, refusing to engage with us. She was medicated while still on the streets and with her
consent when she was more interactive, was brought to the center(commune). Over the next 6 months,
with care and medicines she made a remarkable recovery. She has learnt vocational skills like quilting
and organic farming. She has also helped us locate her family and is now almost ready to go home.
At this time we have the capacity to help 20 residents. We are presently full and are having to turn away
women in increasing numbers who would benefit from staying with us.
Our aim at this time to double our capacity. To scale up to this next level we require funds for
infrastructure and operational costs. We are reaching out to you for help in any way you can.
