“My daughter is my world. Please don’t let me lose her to cancer”

My 26-year-old daughter, Rashmi Patra, has stage 3 Hodgkins lymphoma. We found out about her cancer in April and life hasn’t been the same after that. I can’t recall a time when I or my daughter were really happy. Her father left us when she was 16, and I have worked as a cook ever since to take care of the family.

Despite our poverty, I made sure my daughters got education. I worked multiple households and payed their fees. Once they got older, things began to get better because my daughters started working. However, even that happiness was short-lived.

"Life has been not fair to her"

I married off my elder daughter Rashmi with the hope that she would finally have a shot at having a happy family. But that didn’t work out either. Now that she is sick, her in-laws have sent her back to me.

During her five years of marriage, she had miscarriages twice due to bad health. But nothing was as terrible as finding out she had cancer. I couldn’t stop crying and Rashmi was too numb to even cry. I remember when we got home that night, she told to me in her usual soft, gentle voice, “Amma, you don’t have to worry about money. I have decided I am not going to get any treatment. Let this kill me. I just don’t want you to worry.”

I can’t see my daughter die in front of my own eyes, can I? Not when the doctor at HCG told us that after eight chemotherapy sessions she would be able to live a normal, healthy life.

"As a cure, the doctor asked her to stop eating chicken"

It all began when I took her to a local doctor in Nagawara (Bangalore) to get an unusual lump under her ear looked at. The doctor then told us that it was a minor infection. After that, she was fine for few days until another lump begin to grow under the previous one.

We then took her to a different doctor who said that the lump was a result of her eating salty food and chicken. We believed the doctor and began cutting down on that. But, over time she became extremely weak and I took her to a clinic in Malleshwaram.

The doctor asked us to do a biopsy and asked me to take her to Sai Care hospital. It was difficult to get an appointment there. That is when I was referred to a cancer specialist in HCG Hospital. He told us that the cancer was at an advanced stage (third stage) and immediate action was necessary.

Cancer has made her extremely weak. She needs regular medical attention and personal supervision. I have even left work to look after her. At first, I sold my jewellery to pay her hospital bills. Now, I have exhausted all my resources.

"It kills me that I am unable to pay for her treatment"

As it stands, lack of money is all that is stopping my daughter’s total recovery. Even when I was working, I only made Rs. 9,000 per month. Rashmi used to work before, but she has been unemployed for a year. My younger daughter earns around Rs. 15,000 per month. We pay rent and buy the necessary things with her salary.

We have been running around clinics and hospitals for past nine months now. I have exhausted whatever little savings I’ve had. The doctors have scheduled eight chemotherapy sessions for her with each session taking place after a gap of 15 days.
She has to take two blood tests and one dressing session in between these 15 days. That alone costs us Rs.15,000. It has now gone beyond my financial capabilities to fund my daughter’s treatment. My daughter has been through a lot and now lack of money is killing her. Your support can help save her life.

We need help, and for my daughter's sake, please help me get it.
