The area in which we are working is far from the light of 21st century .Being Gandhi fellows, we had to go through a process called community immersion where we lived with one of the families of the community from where the kids came to school. Lack of awareness regarding menstrual health and hygiene really bothered us.
As we talked to the girls in the community and schools, we got to know how that these girls don't talk about periods to their parents or even teachers. We could figure out the misconceptions they carried with themselves.Most of them thought that they were going to die when they got their first periods, some used old damp rags during periods.
They were not comfortable and confident during their periods and even skipped schools which impacted their academics to a great extent.They believed that they are impure when they got their periods and some thought that girls are cursed.
What do we plan to do?
The taboo itself is sensitive and complex but when we try to look back to our own lives, we see the exact problem and the solution as well.
We will reach out to the girls of 6th ,7th and 8th standard.
In order to achieve it:

1.We have collaborated with schools of Olpad Block,Surat which have at least one lady teacher. After having detailed interaction with CRC ,BRC and teachers we gave decided to take up the project which will be continued by the teachers even in our absence.
2.Approached Aditi Gupta , co-founder of Menstrupedia.com. We want to make the menstrupedia comics available in the libraries of schools so that the girls can borrow the books and understand themselves. The girls can help each other understand through these comics which are easily accessible.
3.Aditi has offered to train us online to conduct workshop with the girls and teachers.W e will conduct workshops with the help of Menstrupedia comics and few charts on female reproductive system.
