About the campaign

The district of Sundergarh in Odisha is home to rich traditional handicrafts like Applique, Dokra, and Grass Crafts. However, unabated conflicts and frequent natural disasters make it one of the most impoverished places, and these traditions today face near extinction. But this place is home to people like Rashmita who, in spite of all challenges are determined enough not only to keep the tradition of centuries alive, but also travel far and wide one day to take Applique to the world. Punarnawa is the story of such women. In Sanskrit Punah-Nawa means - that which renews itself every moment. Three clusters of Punarnawa crafts (www.punarnawacrafts.org) are today scripting the story of revival for Applique and Dokra. Set up with initial assistance of the State Institute of Development and Design, these clusters today employ over thirty artisans from the nearby villages. We provide design interventions, livelihood development and artisan trainings in our effort to create a perfect balance between youthful exuberance and ethnic heritage. We are expanding now to six more such mega clusters, and each of these needs Rs. 200,000 (USD 3200) for purchase of clothes, stitching equipment, scrap brass etc, basic machinery like sewing machines, and storage space. In year, each cluster is expected to do business of over Rs. 1,000,000 (USD 17,000) providing sizeable income to the artisans. A sustainable profession in crafts is as much important to revival of the village economy as it is for the artisans themselves. With your support we aim to create a movement where artisans like Rashmita and her traditions find the respect they deserve. For every Rs. 10,000 (USD 200) contribution we give a goodie hand-made gift pack and a letter of gratitude from artisans.
