The outpouring of generosity, support and love that Trepan has received over the last two months still continues to amaze us.  Artist Kruttika Susarla recently made a bunch of beautiful slides for us (you can see them below) and that's led to more donations, including contributions from literally around the world (we've seen donations from the US, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, the UK, Hong Kong and other countries).

Meanwhile, a quick update from our side.  As said earlier our hope was to move him out of the 'stroke unit' (a sort of mini ICU) to a room this week.  But over the last few days his overall condition has dipped, and his energy level is far lower.  The doctors are trying new combinations of medications but for the moment any other change is not advisable. We're hoping for a recovery soon.

A quick update from us. On Thursday evening Trepan was shifted to a smaller part of the ICU, known as the 'stroke unit', where patients with less critical conditions are kept. It's a nicer place than the main ICU - less noise, less people, much more relaxed environment and little more flexibility in terms of how long we are allowed to visit.  Yesterday we managed to spend over an hour with him in total, talking about everything from the illness to the state of our workers' union here in Dehradun.

But our goal is still to safely get him to a room.  The team of doctors here is flexible and committed, and we're fortunate to be able to work with them on this.

We also withdrew our first tranche of funds from the donations raised so far - 2 lakhs for paying pending hospital bills.  Thank you so much again.  We've crossed 50% of our target, but we still have the remaining 50% to go.  Please continue to share and circulate so that we can collect the funds we need to support this exceptional human being.

Thank you again for all the kindness and support Trepan has received so far.  Medically he remains stable, and the outpouring of affection and solidarity from across the country has really cheered him. Hopefully we'll soon be able to post a message directly from him, but that will probably only happen after he gets out of the ICU; in the limited time he has with the tracker in the ICU we prioritise having conversations with him.  The doctors have not yet been able to plan how to shift him because they are trying to work out the logistics of how to do so while arranging the support and safety measures he needs. We should find out more in the next day or so.

Our hope is that once he is shifted out of the ICU he will be able to use his tracker and interact with people more, we'll be able to feed him better and take care of his comfort, and the overall risk of infection will be lower.

There's a common assumption that once a person is on a ventilator they're at death's door and will go soon.  For neurological problems like this that isn't necessarily the case.  Even in the worst case scenario of continued dependence on a ventilator for breathing support, people have lived for years or even decades, and continued to be engaged with the world.  Here's a Twitter handle of someone who's been on a ventilator for several years now, who's written two scifi novels in the meantime and is working on a third.  Eric Valor, who became famous because of his relentless involvement in ALS research and campaigning for patients' rights, was on a ventilator for over a decade.  And we all know the case of Stephen Hawking, who lived on ventilatory support for several decades.

Our goal in this campaign is to be able to securely provide Trepan the staff and medical support he needs so that he does not decline or collapse just because we were not able to provide the necessary support.  We've already seen with his disease that fighting makes a huge difference and can produce results, even if only for some time, that were deemed impossible.  Your sheer generosity has ensured that at least for now we will not be staring at an awful choice of either bankrupting his family or having to try to fight without the medical support he needs. But we'll only be able to really plan once we reach closer to our fundraising target, so our appeal for solidarity and support continues, as does our deep gratitude to all of you.
