Our Story

The beautiful textiles that Kavita, in the picture, sells are a stark contrast to the harsh struggle she has fought all her life to free herself and keep her two teen-aged children free of the ugly Devadasi system she had been inducted into as a little girl. This 43 year old single mother from Chikodi village in the Belgaum district of Karnataka now earns a precious Rs.4500 per month which pays for her children to go to school and keeps her family fed, clothed, and with a roof over their heads. Prudent with her earnings, she saves some of this for a rainy day. The future is still holds uncertainty and can be secured if Kavita scales up her business, increasing her income by Rs.7000. Her friends, Kasthuri and Mallavva have similar stories. They bought their freedom and independence when they started a buffalo and goat rearing business to support their children and poor ailing families. Now, they need to think of the future and save for it - something they too can achieve if they expand their small businesses. These 3 women seek a loan of Rs.45,000, repayable over 18 months, to expand their small scale businesses. This loan will help them buy the raw materials needed to scale up and increase their meager revenues, ensuring a safe and secure future for their children and families.

Chikkodi is a small town located in the Belgaum district of Karnataka surrounded by hills in all directions. After moving up and down through town streets, we finally reached Kavita’s house. Kavita Sanadi is a former Devadasi and now successfully runs her own textile business. She recently took a Milaap loan of Rs. 20,000 to buy Saris and expand her business. She is able to sell at least 2 to 3 Saris in a day and earn a profit of Rs. 50 for each. During festival times, demand increases and so does her profits. I later learned that the house Kavita runs her shop from is her mother’s. Her own house, which was allocated to her by Karnataka government under Devadasi rehabilitation scheme, is located far up on the hilly region. “Very few people came there. They used to say it’s very far up,” she says. So she decided to shift her shop to her mother’s place. She has been running this business for 4 years now. She told me with a hint of pride in her voice, “I took municipality training for tailoring a long time ago. When I get time, I also stitch school uniforms, blouse. It increases my income.” Kavita had to drop out of school after 3rd standard and fight social stigmas and cope with traumas of exploitative Devadasi system all alone. But even so, she single-handedly managed to start her own business, take care of her two sons and make a dignified life for herself. One of her son is studying in 2nd year and another is in higher kindergarten. She intends to provide them the best opportunities in life and is willing to work as hard as possible for that.
