Shantilata Behra wants to make her son, Ramesh, a teacher. A simple woman who loves the camera, that’s how I remember Shantilata. As we sat down talking about son, who studies BBA in SCEM College, Shantilata told me that apart from taking care of the house, she is also engaged in tailoring. When I asked her what she wants her son to become, she said, “I want him to become a teacher.” When I asked her why specifically teacher, she replied, “It’s the respect you get.” It was something about her answer that instantly caught my attention. I suddenly had a new found respect for this woman. Shantilata told me that through tailoring she makes around Rs. 3000 per month. Talking about the loan she took through Milaap for her son’s education, Shantilata said,” With the money I was able to pay his admission fees. His tuition fee has also been taken care of.” After bidding her goodbye in the traditional Namashkar, I set on the journey to meet our next borrower.
