Geeta sits with her youngest son in the Kirana shop

*Due to an honest mistake on part of the field partner, the incorrect photograph was uploaded for Geeta which was only detected when I went to meet her. I met her at the Kirana shop. She gladly showed me the store and proudly sat inside the shop when I took some pictures. Geeta is a 53-year-old mother of three sons and one daughter. All her children are married. Her eldest son works as an operator in Bank in Bijapur. The second son works as a Bank Supervisor in a town called Raybag. And the youngest son stays in the village itself and helps Geeta in running the kirana shop. Geeta grabbed some biscuit packets, came out of the shop and asked me to follow. I wasn’t too sure, but I quickly walked with her. After juggling with the mud and enjoying the sight of happy children, we arrived at her home and before I could say anything, Geeta asked her daughter-in-law to bring a glass of milk. There I was having a sweet conversation over milk and biscuit. Geeta went on to tell me how few years back, she decided to start the Kirana shop so that she and her husband would not have to go the farms. The loan from Milaap helped them put the shop in good shape. With the loan, they bought wooden planks and also additional inventory. Now, the shop helps generate an average monthly income of Rs 13,000. With the little savings, they had, Geeta started vegetable vendor business about only 15 days ago. She now sells fresh vegetables such as capsicum, cabbage, brinjal, tomato, etc. in a nearby taluka. She delightfully told me that he was so far able to sell vegetables worth Rs 1500. As I sat there, a lady from the neighbourhood came to purchase ½ kg lady fingers and the very enthusiastic Geeta measured the vegetable and gave it to her. I could see a smile born out of independence..
