As we (the field officer and I) waited at the common meeting point of the SHGs of village Hidakal, someone sent for Prema. It was almost afternoon, hurriedly she came to meet us. “I have to buy a fresh stock of bananas today. The last lot just got over.”, said Prema as I was curious to see her stock of bananas. 51-year-old Prema’s family comprises of her husband and her son. Her husband works as a farm labourer while their son is involved in motor welding in a nearby garage. Prema started selling bananas to add to their household income. However, the low savings always led to a dearth of banana stock. After taking a loan of Rs 30,000 from Milaap’s partner MASS, now she does not have to worry about purchasing fresh stock. “I comfortably earn Rs 100 per day by selling bananas in the small market place of our village.”, said Prema. Since, she had to head to the wholesale market to purchase the new stock, without taking much of her time, we bid her bye after taking a picture.
