From afar, Parimala's house looked like it collapsed. It rained the previous day in Marathur and I feared that the storm might have caused it. I rushed onward to see if that was indeed the case. It wasn't. The part of Parimala's house stood ruined also stood utterly unoccupied. "It has been like that for over nine years now," said Parimala a little later, laughing at my misplaced concern. "We bought this house with plans to renovate. But like many things in life, it got pushed for a later time." Parimala lives with her two children, a boy and a girl, and her husband, in one portion of the entire structure. "We built this part where we live after we moved," said Parimala. "It's enough for now, but our children are growing." Parimala's daughter is in Class 1, while her son is still in kindergarten. "When they grow," continued Parimala, "I want them living in a secure place. That's how we decided to build a toilet.." With the renovation of her house in plans, Parimala attempted to acquire a housing loan and a sanitation loan. "We got the sanitation loan," said Parimala. "But what good is it if we can't repair the house first?" We haven't gotten a housing loan for the renovation yet." With the loan amount for the toilet in hand, but with no way to build it without the new plans for the house, the family decided to withdraw. "We chose to wait," said Parimala. "We used the loan to cover for my daughter's school fees instead. Whatever we are doing, it is for them, after all." The family hopes to build the house and the toilet in the next two years.
