As a fellow, meeting borrowers is the exciting part of the job. To know their stories, have conversations about everything under the sun; is what keeps me going. However, I do wish I knew Bengali to have these conversations with ease. But I do get lucky at times. Meet Joydeb, my favourite borrower. You know that happy feeling you get when you find someone who understands every word you speak. Joydeb was exactly that for me.  Being the not so shy kind and hindi that good, I knew my next one hour was sorted.

Joydeb is class 10 student of Dhupguri High School. Lover of cricket, he worships Virat Kohli. Knowing I was from Bangalore, we made a pact of sorts that If I ever meet him, I have to ask ‘why would he endorse a fairness cream?’ Laughing about many such random things, his mother reminded us that it good time to chat about his study plans for the year.

This year being a crucial one, Joydeb wanted to enroll himself for private tutions for all subjects. Also being part of NCC (National Cadet Corps) in school; that had its additional expenses. His family knew he was a smart kid but to score really good marks, private tutions were an absolute necessity. Rs 1000 a month for private tutions and additional camp expenses of NCC, his family’s hands were tied. The only income they rely on is from the cycle repair shop his dad owns in Dhupguri market.

The Milaap loan of Rs. 15000 took care of Joydeb’s needs. His mother applied for the loan and decided to work in the fields to pay off the installments. Daily wages of Rs. 130 a day took care of their weekly installments. Having scored good marks in his recent mid term exams, his mother is assured about his son’s future. The faith this family has in Joydeb’s dream of working in a big city; that they would do all it takes to make it happen. This is best part of my job. To witness small amount of money encouraging borrowers to make it happen. To re instill faith in themselves and their dreams. Things a Milaap loan can do.
