On a pleasant Saturday morning, we headed towards Saikul which is about an hour away from Imphal, the capital of the state of Manipur in northeast India. We headed towards a local market in Saikul Village to meet Lheijahat, a member of the group called Lenchonghoi (A). Their group representative Thethem was out of station.

This group consists of five women- Thethem, Lamkhonei, Lheijahat, Nengneikim and Nemjanei- who availed an energy loan of Rs. 60,865 from Milaap to each purchase the 40 watt mini solar home lighting system which lights 4 bulbs for 12 hours a day. It can be installed in adjacent rooms via a 90-meter wire. Lheijahat is a hardworking 55-year-old retired social worker. Her husband is a cultivator. He earns about Rs. 14,000 a month while she earns Rs. 2000 a month. The scarcity of electricity at their village made life very difficult for the people living there. The mini solar home lighting system has been very useful for Lheijahat and her family. Her grandchildren have been able to study comfortably in the evenings without straining their eyes. Cooking, cleaning, eating and reading has also been much more easier. They have started saving money since they no longer have to spend money on candles, petromax and other alternate lighting systems.

This group of women are very happy with the solar home lighting system which has been working efficiently. They thank Milaap and WSDS for the loan and for making their lives more comfortable.
