I was in Morab, a village in the Belgaum district of Karnataka, very recently to meet all the loan borrowers and inquire about their businesses. Morab is a very remote village in rural Raibag region of Belgaum district. A 30 mins drive in the local bus brought me to the village. A field staff of MASS, which is a local field partner of Milaap, was there to receive me and show me around. All the borrowers were gathered there for an SHG meeting.

Lata availed a loan of Rs. 20000 to buy a buffalo. She added Rs. 10000 from her savings and bought a buffalo for Rs. 30000. Now she looks back and assures that this was a right decision made. Lata was able to increase her monthly income by Rs. 2000. Cattle rearing is an easy business choice for most people in the village, who are looking for a steady source of income with little investment. She works full-time as an agricultural labourer. She comes back home to take care of her buffaloes. Her mother helps her with the business. Her husband is also an agricultural labourer who toils hard in the fields to make ends meet. She says that she is able to save an amount of Rs. 700 to Rs. 1000 after paying for the expenses and the loan's monthly installment. She is happy that she has taken this step. Now she can dream of a better future for her child. At the end of the discussion she was sweet enough to pack me some home made sweets. This made my day.
