The wide expanse of green paddy fields lays the setting for our conversation with Jahanara Bibi as we sat outside her house. A small crowd had also gathered around, eager to listen in to the conversation. Besides the necessary purchases of seeds and fertilizers, Jahanara Bibi said," I was also able to build a water pump for my paddy field with the loan amount". Business has been growing steadily since then, and she has also purchased a tractor for the field. She recalls how they had been going through a financial crisis at the time of availing the loan and it had helped them for that year’s sowing season. Rice is a staple food in West Bengal and this ensured a year round demand for Jahanra’s paddy crop . They also grow jute, mustard and various other vegetables. She is occupied in farm work along with her husband for most of the day and does not have time for any other business. Her elder son has started a sewing business after completing Class 10 and her younger son now studies in Class 10. She is thankful to all her lenders worldwide for this help in sustaining her agribusiness.
