It was around 7 am when I entered Bhiradi, a small village in the district of Belgaum, Karnataka. The sun was up and so were the women in the village. Kasturi, a 40-year-old mother of two was seated outside her house on a plastic chair. She noticed my arrival and welcomed me into her home. She took a loan from MASS for her buffalo rearing business. With the loan, she purchased a buffalo. She remarked, “Initially, we would sell 4 liters of milk every day. All the houses in the village have buffaloes now. There is no demand anymore so we had to sell the buffalo.” With the money procured by the sale, she started a paan shop. “The paan shop was also not profitable. Our competitors in the village offered lower prices and we went into a loss. We just shut down the shop”, she sadly added. When asked what her plans for the future are, she said, “I’ve noticed that a lot of women buy chili powder from the market which is far away. I’m planning on purchasing a chili grinding machine. I want the spice of my chili powder to be in every household’s meal.” Watch out Bill Gates, you have a competitor.
