Meet Kanaka Behera

I met Kanaka Behera during my last field visit to Siripur, Bhubaneswar. Kanaka lives with her daughter and husband. She works in 3 houses as a housemaid for a living. Her husband works as a agricultural labourer. They together make about Rs. 10,000 per month. Their elder daughter is married and lives in Western Odisha. Eight months go Kanaka took a loan of Rs. 20,000 for her younger daughter, Satyabati's education.

Satyabati is currently studying in + 2 Arts in a neighbouring girls college. Kanaka told me that her elder sister was a bright girl and wanted to study but they got her married because a very good family had asked for her hand. But they wanted Satyavati to study and at least finish her graduation. With the help of the loan from Milaap , Satyabati has joined a coaching class and her academic performance is also slowly improving. Satyabati and her mother would like to thank you for helping them.
